The purpose of highlighting above names in varied fields is to appeal to my friend that Yes in India, we were never short of Greats, who were of highest possible repute, few went un-recognized and there were few who were recognized more by the outside world. Let us not make this mistake ever again and let us give the due regards these great Indian men/women deserve. Every Nation has such few men who are the backbone, who are the foundation/the pillars, on whose idea the nation and its people evolve and indeed, forgetting them is one big sin.

Below are the excerpts from an Article published on  Satyendra Nath Bose, it reflects the challenges Indian giants had to face, the hurdles to the path of recognition and so many unknowns … at the same time article highlights the agony of writer due to lack of recognition of his ideal/of his hero.

When his meticulously researched paper sent for publication was returned by the Philosophical Magazine from London with not-so-flattering remarks, Satyendranath Bose did not lose heart. He was so sure of his finding. This was in 1924.
Born on January 1, 1894, Bose studied in Calcutta and was brilliant in his studies. His classmate was the other great (also forgotten) Meghnad Saha, and the legendary Jagdish Chandra Bose was his teacher.
At 22, Bose was appointed lecturer in Calcutta University, along with Saha. In 1921, he joined the then newly created Dacca University as Reader in Physics. He had a couple of papers published by the same journal earlier, co-authored with Saha. It was here while teaching that he wrote this paper for deriving the Planck’s Law. His paper was titled ‘Planck’s Law and Light Quantum Hypothesis.’
GOLDEN PERIOD
The early decades of 1900 were a golden period in the growth of science. It was teeming with great scientists in the western world competing with one another creditably. This was the period when classical sciences such as physics, chemistry, astronomy and medicine were outpacing one another, despite little and inefficient communication. The Moore’s law of today would pale into insignificance if we apply it to that period.
In 1900, Max Planck explained in the theory of black body radiation that light is emitted in discrete amounts (quanta) rather than as a continuous wave. But his derivation of this formula was not satisfactory to other scientists, in fact even to himself. However, his formula held true to everyone’s surprise.
Albert Einstein’s Nobel Prize-winning paper explained the photoelectric effect based on Planck’s quanta as photons in 1905. (Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize for this paper, not for his papers on Relativity!) But many of his colleagues were not fully convinced of his yet-to-be-developed photon theory. The world was waiting for a new theory on fundamental particles to fill the gaps.
Under these circumstances, Bose re-sent the paper to Albert Einstein in June 1924, with a fervent appeal for his perusal and opinion. “Though a complete stranger to you, I do not feel any hesitation in making such a request,” he wrote. (He was being modest; he had earlier translated Einstein’s Relativity papers into English with Einstein’s permission). Little could he have foreseen the impact this was going to have.
Einstein immediately recognised the significance of this paper. This paper was going to substantiate and revolutionise his theory of photoelectric effect. Einstein himself translated Bose’s paper into German and sent it to Zeitschrift für Physik with his endorsement for publication. With his demigod status, Einstein’s words carried much weight. It was promptly published, and immediately Bose shot into prominence.
SEMINAL PHENOMENON
Einstein personally invited Bose to work with him, and their efforts culminated in the Bose-Einstein statistics, an important and seminal phenomenon in quantum physics.
His work was wholeheartedly supported and appreciated by the leading lights in quantum theory, such as Louise de Broglie, Erwin Schroedinger, Paul Dirac and Heisenburg.
In honour of Bose’ (and every Indian), Paul Dirac coined the word ‘Boson’ for those particles which obey Bose’s statistics. In atomic theory, only Fermions (named after Enrico Fermi) and Bosons were named after physicists. What a wonderful distinction conferred on our great scientist.
He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1954 — and forgotten afterwards.
This is not intended to be a scientific article, but a grim reminder of our apathy to our eminent scientists who had toiled with great shortcomings, yet came out with flying colours. J.C. Bose, P.C. Ray, M. Saha, C.V. Raman and countless other yesteryear scientists, who had achieved so much, were acclaimed internationally, yet ignored and were in oblivion at home.
Is it not a shame that Bose is known more to westerners (even now) than to Indians? How many of us are aware of his communication to Einstein and the subsequent events. It is perplexing why this little incident of Bose sending his paper to Einstein has not found a place in our schoolbooks!
We overlook scientists and their achievements. Yet we don’t fail to adulate and elevate A.R. Rahmans, Kamal Hasans and Khans for their achievements on the screen/ in entertainment. No complaints. Just why don’t we extend this courtesy to our other achievers who worked for lifting India on Inernational map, who forced world to see India as a scientific, technologically advanced nation and not a mere colorful country?
We, Indians, are blessed with many festivals to celebrate. Quite a few are new years! Apart from January 1, we have many new years, Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, etc. Of these, we chose unanimously to celebrate the astronomically insignificant date of January 1 as our own, and bash up our streets with unrestrained celebration with booze, dance and gaiety.
Why cannot January 1, birthday of Satyendranath Bose, be celebrated also as a National Scientist Day?

The novel Novels

October 2, 2011

It really helps you a lot when others can suggest a good novel. I was always encouraged to read good books, varied books, classic/neo/religious/cultural/fiction/scientific/comic/children books. It helps in making opinion, having a conviction and developing presence of mind. Books develop person reasoning skills, thoughtfulness, his articulation, comprehension skills and the vocabulary .

So, today as I remember  I have read good many number of books and of difference types.  From adventures of tom swayer to detective novels of Sherlock Holmes, from classic wuthering heights to biography of Tesla. From short stories/novels of Premchand to RK Narayan short stories and many more…

I would like to mention few very interesting ones: wings of fire, gora, 2 states, five points someone, biography of madam curie, yossel, sherlock holmes, feluda, ask jeeves, da-vince, amar chitra katha comics etc…

I must say, I was equally preplexed by the detective skills of Feluda (Satyajit Ray creator) as I was mesmerized by the sharp mindedness and brains (wittiness) of Sherlock Holmes. I was touched by the narration in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte as I was by Kabuliwalah story of Tagore or Premchand numerous short stories. PG Wodehouse Jeeves character was so hilarious and full of subtle humour kept me cheerful in my evenings and Yossel (by …) gave me serious realization of world war 2 ghettos and atrocities happened there.

Over the time, I have seen lot of movies and few of them I love to watch again and again. Movies add to the imagination, so I think reading a novel first and then going for a movie on it, and  in between developing ones own criticism for the story and its characters, can keep the story fresh in mind all the time and can help in appreciating the writer on one hand and relating to ones own life or real life events on the other hand.

India – I see an opportunity in disguise

February 9, 2011

while i looked around and what i saw around
i had my moment of relief and agony
in the end i was confused whence i listened silently
i could hear the sound and i saw the light finally

http://pralayinbihar.blogspot.com/ : please take time out and read this blog.

If I compare INDIA with its neighbouring countries like pakistan, burma, srilanka, bangladesh, I consider its democracy, its governance as comforting, but when I read the news or the articles the image that develops does not really look encouraging, it requires a deep breadth, a consoling hand or the company of somebody with focussed approach and free spirited nature, which can help in developing a more optimistic picture of the growing india. Not only its growing in size, its growing by leaps and bounds in terms of educated india, self-reliant india, fashionable india, service industry india, space research india, pharma india …but there is more growth in the rich and poor gap, the apathy towards rural develpment, towards the billion begging around, the cultural divide between generations and the plaguing “chalta hei” attitude, the lack of seriousness towards most of the things.

My question: what good I am of to anybody!!!  why should any good happen to me, I earn 20000, 40000  or more – doIi donate every month even 1/100 of this amount, I spend 1/2 on my enjoyment, I need colddrink, bond movies, high speed internet, car drive, air conditioning, restaurant visit, makeup delicacies, branded clothes, etc… etc… but what i am becoming by applying / adopting all this in life. Let us not resign to our beds just because we pay taxes, this is our society and we only can develop it.

What use is the technology which can not help INDIA prevent a suicide by farmer happening every 30 min, and did I say how should i help India, or lets say help the kid of the cook who comes at home, share the medical bills of maid, or atleast tell stories or share some time with kids at local school …if I am short of time, I am not short of money , I have Rs 1000 which can bear the education of kid at local school or his/her stationary bills…, my accomplishments are way to small, with those accomplishments I can only struggle in life, I can not rise up to the occasion , I can not run and definitely cannot help other walk.

To walk or run I have to think bigger, I have to see opportunities in the apathy, misery and poor life around me, if I am getting carried away by them, I am weak, I should stand for the occasion and do some constructive, then only ideas will come and then only muscles will develop.

Traffic In India – ponpo

October 9, 2010

Like share market, traffic in india in unpredictable, govern by moods and sentiments of people, and nobody is spared, everybody tries his best but its the randomness – the higher entropy which governs the traffic.  Having said that, I mean a Truck driver, is not far from humiliation of 3rd degree if hits a rickshaw puller, no explanation requied, even if rickshaw puller was drunk and low at driving sense. Rich pals better beware of media, with 100 24*7 news channels, their courtmashal will occur with certainity over a hit and run case . Poor are poor anyways who do not have any place to drive cycles or walk on major highways but they also command full authority on their town roads, its their and a foreigner dare not challenge them about the driving sense on their home streets.

Let me come to horns, the most pervasive thing on indian roads! Indian drivers are so habitual of honking as if 4th law of Newton states that only on honking, wheels move (who’s wheels – of the idiot in front :-)), especially on one-way it is tough to convince the driver that in a one-way moving traffic everybody around him wants to move forward, nobody has arrived on the road to stand still and meditate or do dharna but still horn has to be blown to remind everybody – lets keep moving.

Game Theory, the branch of applied mathematics (heard of Beautiful Mind – John Nash) can be invariably applied to Indian Traffic as it is applied in areas where an individual success in making choices depends on the choices of the others…My earlier line carries the subtle answer, in india people honk horns just to tell others that time is moving out , slipping away and the KAAL is coming closer and guess what, we need to reach our destination, as our options are limited on road, we need to prompt others to give us way, so lets not slow down, even if its a jam keep your mind racing at 110km/hr

Canada Trip – economy class

July 24, 2009
Flight Stop
Flight Stop

Trip details:

United Airlines: 19 July to 22 July, Louisville – Chicago – Toronto

Hotels: 19-20-21  Isabella Suites; 21-22 Global BackPackers

The journey was more than a fun, it started as a race to get the VISA stamping done from canada, I had earlier made a mistake and this was the second time I was making it to the Visa stamping scheduled for 20 July 10:30 am Monday morning. Only Three days before that I realized and on checking from Immigration/Lawyer firm got the information that I will have to leave India if Visa is denied. It was a shock. I dumped everything important in my 2 bags and started my journey on late night 18July. My roommate Rajan also wished me good luck, I thanked him for the dinner and the taxi arrived (driver: african american with good idea about indians) at 11 pm. I reached 5 hrs before my flight scheduled for 6 am next morning i.e on 19July. I spend 5 hrs over the couch on the small airport of Lousiville with 2 elderly people sitting on the only other available couch at the louisville airport.

isabella hotelMorning was quite, weather was normal with clear sky and our flight went very smoothly, we touched Chicago in 45 minutes. From Chicago to Toronto the flight took 1hr20min and we landed in Toronto at 11:15 am. I had almost full day for myself. Taxi with Sardarji driver dropped me at Isabella, my room was small but neat and cosy . I liked it. I prepared all my papers for next day, took a hot bath, and got ready for Toronto sightseeing. I had Toronto map, address of my hotel and US consulate, 150 canadian dollars in my pocket. Sherbourne station was just 2 minutes walk from Hotel, and Toronto Metro was as good as Chicago or Manhattan. I took a subway and got down on Queen station, Eton Center was just on the station. Woah! the delicious hot fried rice (at thai outlet in the food court) was one of the best fried rice i had in last 2-3 years. He prepared just like the way dhaba guys prepare, playing with the dishes and hot vessels. I also took 1 water bottle and a juice drink from the open market area (pick and move area), took some snapshots of the gease flying inside this eton mall, and rested on the top floor of it. Later the same evening I made myself familiar with the US consulate builing and the surrounding locality and market. It was between Osgodon and Patrick station. Then i returned back home and picked a sandwich from the restaturant facing my hotel (serving woman was from middle east), the sandwich was good. I took a quite sleep, got up at 6:45am, prepared the file, took breakfast and left via taxi at exactly 8:45am.

Last day trip at US consulate provided me an added advantage, I was all set on 20Morinng for my interview. It went well. Thanks to the immigration officer, he did not ask anything, it was too quick.

Toronto Map : http://transit.toronto.on.ca/archives/maps/downtown.gif  Points of interest : Sherborune station (close to my Isabella hotel, patrick station – cloes to simcoe street where us consulate exists, queen statn – eton center/mall, st. andrew statin – close to CN tower)

Once out of Consulate I straight went to hotel, talked with the caretaker, she was punjabi indian women (tall and handsome). Told me not to worry, she herself leaves and takes metro late night at 12 -1 sometimes. (remarkable – though being one of the most costly city of the world, its streets are considered quite safe). I prepared myself for Niagra trip and took the bus from Toronto Bus terminus at Bay Street (close to Patrick station), Coach Canada – $38 total trip, I was on the second seat, sitting next to a korean/japanese lady. She got down before Niagra, At Niagra , as advised by the driver I took the trail – in 20 minutes I reached the Niagra fall sight. It was beautiful, a preserved biosphere, very nice , natural , and cool place. So many people from all over world, so many Indias, chinese , europeans – all strolling around, a big market place, fun rides, big gardens, and indeed it was a bird habitat (palinquins).

horseshoe fallMiad of the MistI took lot of snapshots, went for Maid of the Mist, took some rest in the garden, had a burger from Burger King and then took 8:30 Green Line bus to the terminus. At 10:15 coach canada came, this time the driver was a punjabi girl. At 11:45 I reached Patrick Station and by 12:20 I was inside my hotel.
Global Village BackPackers
Global Village Backpackers

)On 21st, I got up late by 8:30, took breakfast, fixed all my luggage, took bath and then check-out of the hotel to another hotel – Global BagPackers Village at 12:45 (taxi driver an indian gujju). My room 104D, quad bed, $28 , there was 1 person luggage but nobody around, I put my two big ones in the lockers (the lockers – coins story – and i informed them), rest of the day I spend roaming around the downtown, went to CN tower, the market around, had rice with tofu at thai restaurant – they served very nicely. I returned hostel at around 7pm, was in bed in 15 minutes and then woke up at around 10pm, after getting fresh, I watcched Die HArd , talked to mummiji, papaji and then went to bed at 2 – 2:30 midnight, my roomate entered around that time. I was half asleep and he just dived on his bed and was asleep. There were lot of guys and girls doing brush, using bathroom. My sleep was ok , I got up at 7 and after spending sometime, took breakfast, the check -out time was 12 noon, I decided to check-out by then but kept my lockers running , roamed outside had lunch at India Palace and at 4:oo , I left with all my luggage to the airport ( taxi driver – bangladeshi).

At Toronto airport, first boarding pass, then immigration officer -2 rounds, then baggage claim, then security check and then finally at 6:50 boarded the plane, it departed at 7:27pm, we reached chicago on time at around 8:30, it was an hour behind there, there was more than an hour at my disposal, I took a sandwich, newspaper and then my next flight started at 9:05 to lousiville, we reached before 10 and I was at home by 11:15pm.

Called home and went to bed.

** few people who gave me right advise     a. the old lady at the toronto airport at the currency exchange counter    b. the korean driver of the bus i took for niagra, his suggestion of taking the walk trail        c.  the fedex attendent suggestion to collect a pre-paid envelope from staples for the us consulate, re-enforcing what the old lady had adviced earlier.

machines, techniques and simple ideas

April 1, 2009

Its these below 6 simple machines on which most of the mechanical devices, even advanced machines and their mechanics depend like todays heavy presses, lifting equipments at construction site, conveyor belts running over long distances etc…
1. lever: scissor, cart
2. wedge: axes, knives, hull of a ship, here force acts perpendicular to the inclined planes
3. screw: uses torque (archimedes deviced screw to lift water from deep holes)
4. axle and wheel: cart
5. pulley: cranes
6. inclined plane
few simple complex machines are
a. bicycle – lever, axle and wheel

the soldiers who fight, they rhyme these words

February 23, 2009

in the book by gaurav sawant – dateline with kargil
numerous times he cited the strong feelings of the soldiers who under the most severe and unhospitable situations, keep up their spirit and take tremendous pride in laying down their lives for their buddy, their battalion, their nation.

(there only expectation from the people and govt is to take care of their families and that also not too outragious but way to sober and humble)
NO doubt , if WE the People will keep ourself unapproachable and will turn a deaf ear to them, day will not be far, when we will be slaughtered by the enemy like cats and dogs and our own men will be no more alive to safeguard us.

few words they rhyme:

poem 1.
subhadra kumari chauhan
veeron ka kaisa ho vasant
http://rajputindia.com/veeron-ka-kaisa-ho-basant/36/

Quote
galbahen ho ya ho krapan, chal chitwan ho ya dhanushbaan
ho ras wilas ya dalit tran
ab yahi samasya hei magar, weeon ka kaisa ho wasant

which describes the nation india, its boundaries, its geogrpahy , its people who have always stood together as and when enemy strike them. Hindu is defensive, he protects , he never infiltrate into others land, but doesnot think twice before killing each soul who tries to rob his land, and hurt his family

poem 2.

Quote
Haath jin mein ho junoon katt te nahi talvaar se
Sar jo uth jaate hain voh jhukte nahi lalkaar se

what will be better than to hear the man himself

poem 3.

udake dushmano ka sir, joshey watan badhaye ja
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadam_kadam_badhaye_jaa

where i can lay down my life for a friend , I will fear not chopping the heads of my enemies

poem 4.

Quoting the lines:

Planet Earth

January 26, 2009
Paul Crutzen – Nobel Prize winner , one of his paper made headlines in lot of newspapers and became cover page of quite a few science magazines.
Geo-engineering ; Green House Effect – he speaks about ways to reduce the Green House Effect, not by decarbonizing the atmosphere but by reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching earth!!!
Quite interesting but its like many other discoveries in the past and holds the potential risk of going out of control if not overseen properly and channelized properly.
There can be two approaches to overcome the Global Warming:
Approach1: To reduce the emission of GreenHouse Gases, carbon content from atmosphere and thus reducing the trapping of heat waves reflected by earth in the atmosphere
Approach2: By adding or injecting such compounds which could either absorb the heat or act as a shield for solar radiation from reaching the earth.
It was a natural phenomenon of Volcano eruption which proved the scientist community right that a large mass of sulfurous haze in the atmosphere can be that shield. This debris can create haze and prevent the solar radiation from reaching earth and can thus help in keeping the earth cool.
Though this Approach 2 has been advised with its imminent dangers as well, this approach or rather the whole philosophy is more like developing an antibody instead of eradicating the virus itself. By following this approach, the community fears it might take away the whole existing motivaiton of de-carbonizing the atmosphere.
The critics of this approach were told a simple truth, that anyways millions of tons of carbon and green house gases are emanating in the earth atmosphere, and so the world is playing around with Earth atmosphere, whats wrong in adding tons of Sufurous particulates as well and test this scientific approach.
