Paul Crutzen – Nobel Prize winner , one of his paper made headlines in lot of newspapers and became cover page of quite a few science magazines.
Geo-engineering ; Green House Effect – he speaks about ways to reduce the Green House Effect, not by decarbonizing the atmosphere but by reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching earth!!!
Quite interesting but its like many other discoveries in the past and holds the potential risk of going out of control if not overseen properly and channelized properly.
There can be two approaches to overcome the Global Warming:
Approach1: To reduce the emission of GreenHouse Gases, carbon content from atmosphere and thus reducing the trapping of heat waves reflected by earth in the atmosphere
Approach2: By adding or injecting such compounds which could either absorb the heat or act as a shield for solar radiation from reaching the earth.
It was a natural phenomenon of Volcano eruption which proved the scientist community right that a large mass of sulfurous haze in the atmosphere can be that shield. This debris can create haze and prevent the solar radiation from reaching earth and can thus help in keeping the earth cool.
Though this Approach 2 has been advised with its imminent dangers as well, this approach or rather the whole philosophy is more like developing an antibody instead of eradicating the virus itself. By following this approach, the community fears it might take away the whole existing motivaiton of de-carbonizing the atmosphere.
The critics of this approach were told a simple truth, that anyways millions of tons of carbon and green house gases are emanating in the earth atmosphere, and so the world is playing around with Earth atmosphere, whats wrong in adding tons of Sufurous particulates as well and test this scientific approach.
